  • Executive Director

    Position Location: Austin

    Class Code: Exempt

    Salary Range: $120,000-$142,335

    The chief executive officer, Executive Director, of the Texas Racing Commission implements, manages, and enforces regulations regarding pari-mutuel horse racing in Texas. The Executive Director exercises strict control and close supervision over all aspects of pari-mutuel racing including licensing, operation of racetracks, conduct of races, veterinary practices, drug testing, and pari-mutuel wagering. Through leadership and management directives, the Executive Director ensures integrity, security, safety, and fairness in pari-mutuel racing and is responsible for the administration of all laws and regulations as provided under the Texas Racing Act. The Executive Director serves at the will of the nine-member Commission.

     - Interprets, implements, and enforces Texas Racing Act, rules, and orders of the Commission in accordance with Commission policy. 
    - Develops recommendations for rules and policies consistent with Commission expressions and applicable law. 
    - Initiates consistent disciplinary actions against licensees, directly and through racetrack personnel. 
    - Manages state and federal litigation through General Counsel and coordination with the Office of the Attorney General.

  • Deputy General Counsel II

    Salary Range: $95,000-$120,000

    The Texas Racing Commission is a specialized law enforcement agency responsible for regulating pari-mutuel horse racing in the State of Texas.  Duties involve interpreting laws, regulations, and rules, preparing legal documents, and rendering legal advice and counsel. Work involves directing and planning the agency's legal activities; consulting with attorneys; preparing cases for hearings or trial; coordinating the drafting and negotiation of contracts; drafting and monitoring legislation related to the agency's strategic plan and legislative appropriations request; and support the agency's compliance matters related to the Sunset Advisory Commission.  Work is performed under limited direction, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

  • Hearings Officer - Steward

    Position Location: Various

    Class Code: 3530-3534

    Salary Group: B20-B24

    Salary Range: $51,158-$95,000

    Performs complex legal and technical work as a Steward/Judge under the Texas Racing Act and the Texas Racing Commission Rules of Racing for horse racing events at race parks throughout Texas. Work involves conducting hearings and preparing hearings decisions. Provides supervisory oversight for a racing operations team at a race park. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Travel is required.

    Interpret and enforce the Texas Racing Act and Commission rules and determine all questions, disputes, complaints, or objections relating to racing matters in accordance with applicable laws.

    Review applications for occupational licenses submitted at a racetrack and make decisions regarding the issuance of certain licenses.

    Oversee the conduct of live races and decide the official order of finish, including determining whether a horse should be disqualified.

    Prepare reports of all actions taken and observations made during each day's race program.

    Veterinarian (Contract Position)

    Assignments of duties and numbers of needed Veterinarians will depend on the type of meet (Thoroughbred versus Quarter horse or Mixed Meet) combined with the number of horses anticipated on site for morning exercises or daily haul in horses in need of examination at Receiving Barn.

    Assignments will likely follow the posted 2025 race calendar approved by the TXRC Executive Director but may include exercise works and lameness evaluations before and after race meets. These duties and functions are specified in the Texas Racing Act and Texas Racing Commission Rules as they relate to matters of racing with pari-mutuel wagering.

  • Veterinary Technician (Contract)

    Contractor will perform the services of a TXRC Veterinary Technician based at any racetrack assigned by the Chief Veterinarian.

    The Texas Racing Commission Occupational Licensing Program Specialist will perform highly advanced (senior-level) consultative services and technical assistance work. Work involves planning, developing, and implementing major agency program(s) and providing consultative services and technical assistance to program staff, governmental agencies, community organizations, or the general public. May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    Oversees and participates in the development, planning, organization, and coordination of assigned activities and operations of the program; identifies opportunities to strengthen services and programs.
